Update to Travel Insurance Requirements to Enter Cuba

By Ariana Hernandez-Reguant, Health, News and Views, travel Add comments

Cuban consulates have publicized today the details about the new health insurance requirement to enter Cuba as of May 1st. I translate selectively from the e-mail text:

The policy should be purchased prior to traveling but policies will be offered at Cuba’s ports of entry as well.  Only those with valid policies for the entire duration of their stay will be allowed into the country. Valid policies are those by companies represented in Cuba by ASISTUR. Those who are residents of the United States, and travel from the U.S., will have to buy a policy prior to traveling from HAVANATUR-CELIMAR, through one of their affiliated agencies. There are three different policies with different levels of coverage and their respective cost is between 2 and 3 CUCs a day (roughly USD 3-5).

You can download the specific “tabla de beneficios” or coverage table, by clicking HERE.

Can I buy this insurance online before I leave for Cuba April 30? If not, how much of a holdup will I (and probably scores of others encounter when we arrive at Veradero?

Richard, we dont know. Please report back at your return, so that we can inform people. (The policy starts on May 1st, you might not have to get the insurance after all)

The desk has been set up for those not carrying valid insurance cards / papers when entering all ports.
It will me a nightmare at first as where will you buy the CUC’s before entering? If you have insurance already check to see if there is an american tie as they will not repay you ( consorting with the enemy blah blah blah ) Cuban insurance will save you out of pocket or credit card costs in the event of an accident at the time of accident. Depending on insurance carrier you pay up front and submit for refund once home. Sounds good and alot cheaper then what we are offered here.
We got back on the 24th of April.
